Our third session was more about the youngsters in the garden than
anything else. At our first, bigger community meeting we found that our group has 4 priorities, and one of them was that the garden be an educational, fun and stimulating place for children. |

So, we decided to frame our third session around planning for kids. Ben
Helphand from NeighborSpace stopped by and did a great presentation on play and nature gardens, and helped us get into the mindset of children. He covered 5 points, but the main one was that play areas don’t need to be fancy: "That’s the beauty of nature; a few sticks and rocks and most kids are ready to go.” The 5 points he suggested we think about were:

Sara Ellis also led the kids in a planning activity so that they could develop their own ideas for the garden, and wow were they great!
Karim, Ozzie and Damien made a great plan (see photos below), and all picked individual projects to continue working on with us this following week, including the secret garden, kids play area and library. They also talked about things the kids would like to see in the garden, which included (just to name a few):

Once we came up with some ideas, the kids broke into smaller groups based on age where they worked on drawing their plans for the garden. Karim, Ozzie and Damien formed one group and worked together to make a plan using a grid where 1 square = 1 foot. This was to help them begin to conceptualize space.
Yara, Rosie and Aldo also looked at pictures of kid-friendly things they would like to see in the garden. And the younger kids had a great time playing with Reihonna and Liz They also spent time drawing and just playing. At the end of the meeting, the kids came back in and presented their ideas to the whole group. |
LayoutIn preparation for our final session, Zoe has been slowly taking us through elements that we need to think about for the layout of the garden. Last week she brought us the site plan for us to start doodling on, and this week she talked us through some important concepts for developing our plans:
Zoe also led a short design exercise to get us talking about our ideas for the garden layout as a group. We will continue our work on the layout in session 5, but meanwhile, don’t stop drawing! If you need to print out more copies of the layout, you can do so here. |

Project ProposalsAn important part of this session was reviewing ideas about different projects that people brought in. We were a little rushed but managed to look at all of the images, vote on the ones we liked and add comments.

Then a second part of this exercise was choosing projects that we want to prepare a proposal for. We put all of our names into a hat and picked projects in the order that our names were called.
At the end of the meeting we each got to take home an envelope for the project they chose, that included:
Because our proposal is not just for us, it is for the whole community! |
